A couple of shots I took in the gloom early yesterday morning at Rhos-on-sea.

Sunset at Rhos-on-sea

I seem to be drawn to sunsets and I am lucky that we get some pretty decent ones here at Rhos. I took similar shots about the same time last year, but this time I wanted to test out my new Pentax 50-200 zoom lens, so off I went. I’ve made enhancements with Photoshop which has lightened the photo a bit. I took quite a few that night, and I tried a few filter combinations which some came out ok (its a learning curve at the moment) but this one worked for me, and I didn’t use a filter.

A few tweaks with Photoshop (part 2)

Moving a few sliders on the Photoshop interface has changed the photo to a more atmospheric one. It’s enabled me to move forward in time a little.

So it’s worth keeping those not so good photos and just experiment a little to see what you can come up with.

A few tweaks with Photoshop (part 1)

I love trying different things on Photoshop, just to see what I would end up with. I often go back to photographs I shot ages ago which “didn’t work out” but I’m glad I saved because it’s worth having a go rescuing them. This shot was a pretty decent one of the pierhead in Llandudno, taken at dusk last year when on a walk along the promenade.

The changes I made are shown in the next post.

A new beginning…

My interest in photography started around 1982, just after my family moved to the seaside resort of Llandudno in North Wales. My dad had an Electra Soviet made camera which he had for years, so I took it around my new neighbourhood and took loads of photos with it. I lost interest when I realised I had nothing new to shoot, something that would not happen today. A few years went by and I bought a Canon EOS 650 from a bloke in a pub! Not strictly true, I had originally met him at a camera shop in Chester who told me he had one to sell, and suggested we do the deal at The King’s Head in Llandudno. It was a great little camera, my first dip into autofocusing. I later sold it to someone in Canada on Ebay.
However, the age of digitalisation is here and that’s the future now. So, at the moment I have a Pentax 6megapixel K100 with an 18-55 mm zoom lens, and a Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ5. I’m getting by, but I would love to add to my collection.
I also have a strong interest in art, so I’m really keen to learn as much about image enhancing software as possible, especially Photoshop. There’s so much to learn, but slowly but surely I am getting there, and believe I should head towards this direction. I am also especially drawn to the black and white photography. I think my experience of drawing in pen and ink has initiated this, I love to experiment with shade and light.
So. I hope to keep this blog going and post as often as I can. I have blogged before and know how difficult it is to post on a regular basis.
